Breast Enhancement
What Is Breast Enhancement?
Breast enhancement increases the size, fullness, and shape of the breasts to achieve better proportion with the patient’s body and desired aesthetic. Depending on the patient’s anatomy and goals, this can be achieved with implants, the patient’s own fat, or a combination of both — offering options ranging from a natural, subtle increase to a more noticeable, fuller result.
Symptoms and Concerns Breast Enhancement Can Address
Breast enhancement may be suitable if you experience:
- Naturally small breast size
- Loss of breast volume after pregnancy, breastfeeding, or weight loss
- Asymmetry between the breasts
- A desire for a fuller, more proportionate silhouette
- Reduced breast fullness in the upper pole
Types of Breast Enhancement
Dr. Esen selects the appropriate technique based on the patient’s anatomy, desired size increase, and preference for implants versus natural tissue:
Breast Augmentation
Uses silicone or saline implants to increase breast size and improve shape. Implant size, profile, and placement (above or below the muscle) are customized to the patient’s body frame and aesthetic goals, offering a predictable, significant increase in volume.
Fat Transfer to the Breast
Uses the patient’s own fat, harvested through liposuction from areas such as the abdomen or thighs, purified, and then injected into the breasts. This technique offers a more subtle, natural increase in size and softness without implants, along with the added benefit of contouring the donor area.
Who Is a Good Candidate for Breast Enhancement?
You may be a good candidate if you:
- Feel your breasts are too small for your body proportions
- Have experienced volume loss after pregnancy, breastfeeding, or weight changes
- Are in good general physical health
- Have realistic expectations about achievable results
- Have adequate donor fat available, if considering fat transfer
During your consultation, Dr. Esen evaluates your breast anatomy, skin quality, and goals to recommend implants, fat transfer, or a combination of both.
How Breast Enhancement Is Performed
Breast enhancement is performed under general anesthesia. Augmentation typically takes 1–2 hours, while fat transfer may take slightly longer depending on the volume harvested.
- 1. For augmentation: an incision is made (commonly in the inframammary fold, around the areola, or in the armpit), a pocket is created, and the implant is placed above or below the chest muscle
- 2. For fat transfer: fat is harvested from a donor area via liposuction, purified, and then carefully injected into the breast in small, layered amounts
- 3. Incisions are closed with fine sutures, or injection sites are closed with minimal dressing
- 4. A supportive garment is applied to aid healing and final positioning
Recovery Timeline
Days 1–3 Swelling, tightness, and mild discomfort are expected. A surgical bra or compression garment is worn continuously.
Days 4–10 Swelling gradually decreases. Most patients feel comfortable with light daily activities.
Weeks 2–3 Bruising resolves, and many patients return to work and non-strenuous routines.
Weeks 4–6 Implants settle into a more natural position, or fat grafting results become more predictable. Exercise may resume with clearance.
Months 3–6 Final results are visible, with breasts settling into their natural shape and position.
Expected Results
A successful breast enhancement delivers:
- Increased breast size and fullness proportionate to the body
- Improved breast shape and symmetry
- A natural-looking result, whether through implants or fat transfer
- Renewed confidence in clothing and silhouette
- Long-lasting results with proper care
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Which is better: implants or fat transfer?
It depends on your goals. Implants provide a more significant, predictable size increase, while fat transfer offers a subtler, natural enhancement using your own tissue. Dr. Esen will help determine the best fit during your consultation.
Will breast enhancement affect breastfeeding?
Most breast enhancement techniques are designed to preserve breastfeeding function, though this is discussed individually based on your surgical plan.
How long do implants last?
Modern implants are durable, but they are not considered lifetime devices. Many patients keep the same implants for 10–20 years or longer before considering replacement.
Is fat transfer permanent?
A portion of the transferred fat is naturally reabsorbed by the body, but fat that successfully integrates with a blood supply provides a long-lasting result.
Can breast enhancement be combined with other procedures?
Yes. It is frequently combined with a breast lift for patients with both volume loss and sagging, or with body contouring procedures for an overall silhouette improvement.
